This exhibition catalog was conceived as part of the research project supported by the HES-SO fund, “The Archive as Creative Act: Gregory J. Markopoulos’ Absolute Cinema and the Utopia of Temenos.” It was published in conjunction with a double exhibition at the Biel Art Center and Circuit Contemporary Art Center in Lausanne, dedicated to the cinema of Gregory J. Markopoulos and the Temenos archives. The first book to date devoted entirely to the filmmaker in French, it includes a long introductory essay by the catalog’s editors, an interview with Robert Beavers, two texts translated from English by Gregory J. Markopoulos, and notes on the films on display. Markopoulos, a key figure in New American Cinema, broke with the filmmakers’ cooperative movement when he left for Europe in 1967. He then continued his film work independently with filmmaker Robert Beavers and designed a utopian space dedicated to screening his films and housing his archives.
